PwC's global analysis of the sector also points to climate tech outperforming the norm, accounting for a tenth of private market investments in 2023. The Swedish EV maker, however, reported a quarterly decline of 12% in deliveries to 13,900 units, compared with the second quarter, as high borrowing costs dent global demand for new vehicles. Globally, EV sales grew 49% to 6.2 million units in the first half of the year, a report by data analytics firm Canalys Research showed. Polestar Automotive, which is scheduled to announce its third-quarter results on Nov. 8, reiterated its tempered delivery forecast of 60,000-70,000 vehicles for the full year. The company expects to start deliveries of the Polestar 4 compact luxury crossover in China in the current quarter.

They’re on track to miss the mark by more than 40%, delivering only about $55 billion, according to recent forecasts compiled by LSEG. The electric-vehicle industry, for one, was a serial SPAC user whose exuberance sputtered badly. Dressing them up as acquisitions of private firms by listed shell companies enables the participants to play by looser rules. SPAC investors buy shares in the empty vessel before its sponsor and takeover target agree on a valuation.

Chinese electric vehicle maker Nio launches a smartphone at an event in Shanghai on Sept. 21, 2023. He told CNBC that among Nio users from which the company makes a profit, more than half are iPhone users, while the other half uses flagship Android phones from Huawei and other brands. Nio is the first high-end Chinese electric car brand to release its own smartphone, which Li said the company developed in about a year. Huawei also sells its in-car software to other electric car companies such as Avatr and BAIC's Arcfox. He pointed out that the Nio phone app has 600,000 active users a day, about 1.5-times the number of car users.

It will be the company's first car to be delivered in China, as it ramps up expansion in the world's biggest electric vehicle market. Alongside that, Polestar will take the unusual move of launching a smartphone carrying the brand's name. It stems from a joint venture created in June between Polestar and Xingji Meizu, a Chinese smartphone maker owned by Chinese auto giant Geely . And the Polestar smartphone would not be an attempt to grow market share.

STOCKHOLM, Aug 31 (Reuters) - Swedish electric vehicle (EV) maker Polestar's operating loss narrowed in the second quarter as the auto industry slowly recovers from pandemic-related supply chain bottlenecks. Delayed production starts, job cuts and mounting competition from new Chinese rivals have meant a tough year for the company. While some have cut prices to boost demand from consumers grappling with higher living costs, Polestar has maintained its premium pricing. The company posted a net loss per share of $0.14 in the quarter, compared with $0.12 a year ago. Cash and cash equivalents at the end of the quarter were $1.06 billion, compared with $884.3 million in the preceding three-month period.

The Polestar 3 SUV, originally expected late this year, has been pushed into early 2024 because of delays with its Volvo-developed software. Revenue for the second quarter jumped to $685.2 million from $589.1 million during the same quarter last year. Polestar delivered 15,765 vehicles in the second quarter, up 36% from a year earlier, and a total of 27,841 vehicles in the first half of 2023. Polestar had $1.06 billion in cash and equivalents as of the end of the second quarter, versus $884.3 million as of Mar. "We achieved record volume growth during the second quarter," CEO Thomas Ingenlath said in a statement.

Investors are underestimating a buying opportunity in Chinese EV maker Great Wall Motor, which could double its earnings from current levels, according to Ariel Investments. The Chinese SUV and pickup truck maker was named by the investment chief as a company to watch at a recent emerging markets panel. But Mallari-D'Auria said he expects Great Wall will grab market share in China as it increasingly builds out an SUV line with vehicles at higher price points. To be sure, there are risks around trading in Great Wall, whose primary listing is in Hong Kong. Over the longer term, the portfolio manager even expects Great Wall will start to gain market share in Europe, though while the near-term opportunity remains at home.

The auto research firm JD Power assessed dozens of vehicle brands for its latest quality study. The overall quality of new vehicles is deteriorating and nagging problems are on the rise, according to a new study from JD Power. "The basic touch point of door handles is now a percolating problem area as manufacturers attempt to redesign them," JD Power said. JD Power assigned a score to each auto brand based on problems per 100 vehicles, and calculated an industry average of 192 problems per 100 vehicles (PP100), up from 180 in 2022. In terms of vehicles themselves, the Nissan Maxima had the highest initial quality overall, with 106 problems per 100 vehicles, according to the survey.

Volvo Cars, majority-owned by China's Geely Holding (GEELY.UL), said earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT) fell to 5.0 billion Swedish crowns ($488.62 million) from a year-ago 10.8 billion. Volvo said its sales performance was driven by improved production output and that it expected supply and demand to continue to normalise in the wider markets. The company added that the normalisation would bring some additional pricing pressures, but that demand for its cars were expected to be healthy despite high interest rates squeezing its customers and overall market. Volvo reiterated its guidance of solid double-digit growth in retail sales for the full year.
